Cell EXPLORERS Facilitator
Cell EXPLORERS is an educational science outreach programme based in Ireland. The programme
objectives are to inform, inspire and involve young people in modern biology and biomedical sciences
through hands on activities.
Delivered by volunteering science students and employees from 12 teams based in 10 partner
institutions, the programme provides authentic interactions between young people and local scientists
that help to widen young people’s perceptions of science and scientists and combat stereotypes that
might prevent engagement in science.
The programme uses a dual-benefit volunteer model, where the Cell EXPLORERS facilitators guide
young people in hands-on activities, whilst getting theoretical, practical and experiential training in
public engagement in science.
Backed with a strong ethos of inclusion and equity and using educational research evidence to guide
the programmes practices, Cell EXPLORERS works through collaboration with schools, youth groups
or family, to widen participation using remote or in person activities, with particular focus on those
from under-served communities.
